  • Vote to approve November minutes
    • Motion – Melisa LaMalfa, Second – Debbie Brough, unanimous vote to approve minutes.

Digital Citizenship – Logan City District Instructional Technology Coach Jeff Alley

  • Information on digital citizenship for students mostly comes from Common Sense Media and is focused on how to use technology and digital work well.
  • Will be starting to put signage up in the school and in individual classrooms, for example about media balance, internet safety, etc.
  • Will be providing quick, micro lessons from Common Sense Media for students, for example on phishing, during the 10 minutes for announcements on Wednesday mornings.
  • Question – how often? Bi-monthly like mental health?
    • January will be centered on internet safety, will be sharing that time with other topics like mental health notes.
  • Question – are we planning to do it in Spanish? We have a lot of kids who speak Spanish.
    • Should not be hard, will plan to translate slides in Spanish that will come across the screens in the halls and in their classrooms.
  • Have already been doing the slides at the high school since the beginning of the school year, will rotate through the six topics.

School information required by the state to be discussed by the school community council:

  • What devices are being used and how are students using them?
    • Students use the school chromebooks and access information for classes.
  • What are the main applications, programs, and sites used in different classes, grade levels, and subject areas?
    • Canvas, Apps that are integrated and filtered through Canvas; Kahoot; BookIt; new tutoring website
  • What supervision practices are in place when students are online?
    • GoGuardian filter helps keep kids off inappropriate websites – have to add websites to safe list
  • Are there management tools used that allow teachers to digitally monitor student use or limit access to some applications or sites?
  • What are the school rules when inappropriate information appears for students, staff and parents?
    • GoGuardian goes directly to the administration and they follow up with students, work with students directly , warning the first time and they can lose computer privileges. Parents are informed. Second offense they lose computer priverleges.
  • Are there safe reporting procedures for students, staff, and parents? How does the school balance access and safety that is grade level appropriate?
  • What does the administration see as important opportunities for students related to constructive, proactive technology use?
    • Positive relationships with technology.
  • What does the administration see as the greatest internet threats for students?
    • TikTok, SnapChat, Instagram
  • What are the policies in place for tablets, cell phones, etc. brought from home?
    • Cannot have them out at all unless it’s passing period or lunchtime, cannot take pictures of students without permission, can take them out if the
    • Cannot cyber bully, access pornography, etc.
    • Acceptable use policy covers a lot of this.
  • Explain training currently provided:
    • To students about digital citizenship and safe use of technology
    • To parents and guardians about how to discuss and support digital citizenship and safe technology use with their children and how to report inappropriate content
      • Cyber safety tips
      • Link to the parent guidance on GoGuardian is on the website

Vote: Motion to vote that the filtering, management systems, and supervision practices; student education; and the parent/guardian education component currently implemented is appropriate and adequate. Melisa LaMalfa motioned, Elizabeth Blanchard seconded, unanimous vote that the existing items are appropriate and adequate.

Training – What data should our council Review?

New STAR and RISE data – Principal Wagner

Proficiency data are from texting completed in Spring 2021 for the 2020-21 school year. There are not growth data yet because there was no testing in Spring 2020. Using the link above, you can compare our data to other like schools.

The formative assessment data are looking positive this year with a lot of content areas already showing proficiency in the selected standards.

Teacher Survey on Use of Funds – Elizabeth Blanchard

  • Proposed surveying teachers about the existing items that the SCC funds and how helpful they are to help us inform.
  • Question – unless the survey is anonymous how will we know they are being honest about the programs?
    • Discussion on whether it should be anonymous, Principal Wagner is opposed to anonymous surveys.
  • Last year we covered .45 FTE
  • We have been investing and know how many teachers have received instructional coaching and training and are no longer at MLMS.
    • 43 teachers received assigned coaching over the last 3 years
    • 26 currently on staff (60.4%)
    • 17 no longer on staff
      • 2 transferred to elementary in district
      • 8 moved with family
      • 2 had their position absolved for reductions
      • 1 health concern
      • 4 others
  • 2021-22 -- $190k budget for SCC
  • .5 FTE ESL teacher
  • .5 FTE Literacy Academy teacher (86 students – selected
  • $45,000 for Learning Academy, cut short because we didn’t receive the gear-up grant
    • Weekly class on teaching practices with assignments
    • Applied PD during the school year with immediate practice in the classroom, after school
    • Started with 35, now have 25 – any teacher receiving coaching is asked to participate in Learning Academy
    • Provided by instructional coaches (1.5 coaches at MLMS)
    • Considered incorporating it into the school year, would be part of the mandatory professional learning
    • Question – how are the strategies geared toward the populations that aren’t reaching proficiency at MLMS?
      • Yes – the coaching and strategies are geared toward working specifically with students.
    • Question – do the coaches do evaluation or just support?
      • Coaches aren’t evaluating teaching, they are just providing supporting.
    • Spoke to LEA and there is a district concern about coaching being evaluative but that isn’t a problem at our school.
  • Action item: We will continue the discussion about the survey and potential questions

Public Discussion

  • Another school is using questions from the end of year assessments in the formative assessments for students to help them be better prepared for the text
  • Rigor, retention, alignment, and transference
